In order for the bathroom to become beautiful and cozy, you need not only to purchase the tiles you like that have the appropriate characteristics, but also to decide on the method of laying them. There are various options for laying out tiles in the bathroom, each of which has its own advantages. We will try to consider the most common options to make it easier for you to make your final choice.
Making a bathroom plan
Before you start developing a sketch, you need to carefully measure the parameters of the bathroom. It is necessary to clarify:
- length and width of walls;
- ceiling height;
- parameters of the door (doors) and window (windows), their location relative to the corners, floor and ceiling of the bathroom
After this, a plan is drawn on paper to scale. Compliance with proportions is very important, as it allows you to better imagine the final result.
[note]To draw the plan, it is advisable to choose paper as large as possible. This will allow you to better draw many small details that simply will not be noticeable at a smaller scale.[/note]
Having prepared an accurate plan, you need to indicate on it the location of plumbing fixtures, furniture and other items that will always be in the bathroom. At the next stage, small details are applied: the location of ventilation holes, sockets, heated towel rail(s), water heater, etc. is specified.
[note]It is advisable to reflect on the plan all small details, even those that will be attached after laying the tiles. This will avoid a situation where a beautiful decorative element will have to be hidden behind a mirror or shelf, since it is simply impossible to place them anywhere else. [/note]
Having made a plan, you should go to the bathroom and check on the spot for correctness. It is better to take several control measurements and check whether they are consistent with the plan. After this, you can begin choosing the tile layout option.
Layout of wall tiles
Popular styling options
The most common installation methods are:
- Seam to seam is the simplest installation option, suitable for those who do not want to think too much about how to place the tiles in the bathroom. In this case, all rows are straight and correspond to the geometric lines of the room. Laying is done with a plumb line and a square. This is ideal for rectangular or square tiles of any size.
- In dressing - the laid tiles look like brickwork. Most often, rectangular tiles are laid in this way. However, it must be taken into account that this installation method should be used only for horizontal rows: in the vertical direction, the masonry does not make the best impression. Also, laying two contrasting rows can create the illusion of uneven rows.
- Diagonal, which only experienced tilers can handle. Quite a costly option in terms of material consumption. This tile layout in a small bathroom allows you to visually enlarge the available space.
- Checkerboard, similar in technique to the “seam-to-seam” installation, but unlike the first option, in this case tiles of contrasting colors alternate.
- Modular, which can be implemented if you have tiles of three standard sizes, but with multiple parameters. It is also advisable to give preference to tiles from one manufacturer. With the right approach, it is always possible to create a unique, dynamic pattern that can decorate any surface.
- Linear, the implementation of which uses tiles of the same size, but different colors. During the installation process, continuous, intermittent, intersecting or parallel rows are formed over the entire surface of the wall. The alternation of colors is arbitrary. A good option for showing your creativity.
- Ornamental, when a certain pattern is laid out from tiles of different colors. This could be some kind of geometric pattern or ornament in the central part of a plain field. Decorated with a border.
We are working on a design project
For most people, the correct layout is a standard one with a dark bottom and a light top, with one or more rows of borders running between them, and borders inserted in several places. However, you can always deviate from the standards by developing something new and original. Moreover, many designers do not recommend using this option for small spaces.
By correctly placing accents, you can radically transform any room. So, in order to end up with an ideal bathroom, the layout of the tiles should be done taking into account the following features. If you want to visually expand the boundaries of the bathroom, you should:
- choose small tiles;
- give preference to blue, silver, gray-turquoise tones;
- choose diagonal laying for the floor, horizontal rows for the walls;
- use abstract stripes or cross patterns;
- provide a contrasting border or frieze at the very top and at the very bottom;
- install large mirrors and doors with frosted glass.
Raising the ceiling higher will help:
- vertical laying of tiles;
- the presence of vertical colorful stripes;
- placement of decorative elements above eye level.
Examples of tile layout in the bathroom will help you visualize what it will ultimately look like. When looking through colorful photographs, you should pay attention to the above elements. You will see that they really work, allowing you to achieve the desired effect.
Layout of floor tiles
Floor tiles deserve the same attention as wall tiles. Depending on which installation method is preferred, you can achieve a certain effect. In addition to the installation options listed above, you can also pay attention to the following:
- “herringbone” - requires special skill and will allow you to achieve the effect of parquet in the bathroom;
- “stacked” - done with narrow tiles and also allows you to achieve a “parquet-like floor”.
Now, knowing what the layout of tiles in a bathroom can be, you can develop a project yourself. Perhaps you will even give preference not to one specific option, but to several methods of laying tiles at once. In this case, your bathroom will turn out not only very beautiful, but also comfortable, because you created the design for its decoration yourself.
